Hand Arm Vibration Testing (HAVS)

Hand arm vibration tests are tests designed to identify any risk or development of HAVS, which is a collective term explaining the various medical conditions that are associated with regular and high exposure to hand operated vibrating tools. Some people still refer to this as “vibration white finger” but HAVS is now the recognised medical terminology.

The assessment will entail a health questionnaire and a full hand arm assessment (to focus particularly on circulation and sensation) by a qualified and competent Practitioner.

Why should my employees have Hand Arm Vibration testing?

Under Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, employees that are regularly exposed to high levels of vibration whilst using hand powered tools will require assessment of their hand function

Under The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, the HSE recommends that all doctors and occupational health nurses conducting health surveillance for HAVS have completed a 2.5 day course approved by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine. All COPE staff conducting HAVS surveillance have successfully completed this course.

Employees undergoing these assessments will require periodic reviews, the frequency of which will depend on risk, clinical need and HSE guidelines.

Some employees that are identified as having new or worsening symptoms may require referral to our Occupational Health Physician.
