Lung Function Test (for COSHH)

Lung functions tests use a Spirometer calibrated and set to British Thoracic Society (BTS) guidelines to test the function of an employees lung function.

The full assessment entails completion of a paper or electronic health questionnaire and a full lung function test. Employees undergoing this testing will require periodic reviews, the frequency of which will depend on risk, clinical need and HSE guidelines.

Some employees that are identified as having new or worsening symptoms may require referral to an Occupational Health Physician.

When should I be performing lung function tests on my employees?

Under The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH), employees working with substances that are known to be hazardous to the lungs and cause specific work related diseases (such as Occupational Asthma) will require testing of their lung function.
