Health surveillance is an ongoing, systematic process of monitoring an employee's health over time to detect early signs of work-related illness before they become serious. It is a legal requirement for employees who are regularly exposed to workplace hazards including noise, vibration, hazardous substances, dust, fumes, solvents, and biological agents.

At COPE, our health surveillance programmes are built around the HSE health surveillance cycle, ensuring a structured, evidence-based approach to monitoring your workforce. Our programmes are designed to:

  • Protect your organisation against potential claims related to workplace exposure
  • Ensure compliance with your legal obligations
  • Detect early signs of work-related ill health, enabling timely intervention
  • Confirm that your workplace environmental controls are working effectively
  • Establish baseline health measurements to support your risk assessment process
  • Create an open dialogue between employees and employers about health at work

Fit for role assessments are periodic assessments designed to confirm that an employee is physically and mentally capable of safely performing their role.

Unlike health surveillance, which monitors health over time, a fit for role assessment is a point-in-time evaluation focused on an individual's current fitness for a specific role or task. They are particularly important for roles where an underlying health condition could pose a risk to the individual, their colleagues, or the public.

Common examples include assessments for forklift truck drivers, those working at height, in confined spaces, or night workers. For temporary or project-based workers,  such as those on construction sites; one-off clearance assessments can also be arranged.

All fit for role assessments are conducted onsite by COPE's experienced occupational health clinicians.

COPE delivers a wide range of health surveillance and fit for role assessments, including:

  • Audiometry (hearing)
  • Lung function (spirometry)
  • Hand arm vibration (HAVS)
  • Skin assessments
  • Musculoskeletal assessments
  • Night workers assessments
  • Forklift truck driver assessments
  • Confined space assessments
  • Working at height assessments
  • Safety critical medicals
  • New starter baseline assessments

This is not an exhaustive list,  our clinical team will work with you to identify the specific assessments your workforce requires based on your workplace hazards and legal obligations. Speak to our team to discuss your requirements.
